
The Kotri Barrage of the River Indus is experiencing a continuous rise in water levels, with a low-level flood wave expected to pass through within the next two days.
Heavy rainfalls upcountry have caused the Indus River to swell with water breaking banks every passing day. Localities, both legal and illegal, along the river have been warned of rising waters.
As of 6pm on Wednesday, the water inflow at Kotri Barrage was recorded at 190,200 cusecs, with an outflow downstream of 136,300 cusecs, as per the Barrage Control Room. Over the past 24 hours, this marks an increase of 17,395 cusecs in inflow and 14,000 cusecs in outflow.
According to the Flood Forecasting Division of the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the Kotri Barrage has a water capacity of 850,000 cusecs. A low-level flood is declared when the water outflow reaches 200,000 cusecs. Medium-level floods occur at 300,000 cusecs, high-level at 450,000 cusecs, and extremely high-level floods at 650,000 cusecs.
