Authorities in Hyderabad attempted to shift the blame for the city's urban flooding on Monday to cloudburst rather than accepting responsibility for failing to clean drains and sewers ahead of the monsoon.
Met Department focal person Anjum Nazir said cloudbursts only occur in mountainous regions and involve over 100mm of rainfall in under an hour. In contrast, Hyderabad received 56mm on Airport Road in Latifabad and 94mm in other city areas — over a span of two hours. He added that city's sewerage system was not designed to handle such rainfall.
