ISLAMABAD:

A suspect wanted for murder and robbery has reportedly died due to alleged police torture while in custody at Tarnol police station in the federal capital.

A case has been registered against five police personnel, including the station house officer (SHO).

The deceased, identified as Muhammad Nauman Khan from Bannu district, was arrested by Assistant Sub-Inspector Rana Muhammad Saleem and constables Zaheer and Sajid Mahmood.

According to sources, the arrest was not officially recorded, and the suspect was placed in the lock-up without documentation.

Late at night, he was allegedly taken out and tortured, which led to his death while being transported to a hospital, sources said.

Following the incident, senior police officials took strict notice and registered a case against the three officers for murder and illegal detention. SHO Sub-Inspector Shaukat Mehmood and duty officer Muhammad Asif were also booked for abuse of power and involvement in the unauthorized detention.

In a related development, reports have emerged of a private individual escaping from police custody, raising suspicions that he either fled or was deliberately allowed to escape. Investigations into that matter are also underway.

Police officials and the public relations department remained tight-lipped about the incident late into the night.
