Cierra Ortega’s grandmother, Magdalena Carrillo, has spoken out in defense of her granddaughter following Cierra’s departure from Love Island USA amid a racism controversy.

Speaking to TMZ on July 10, Magdalena clarified that Cierra and their family are not racist, emphasizing their immigrant background. Magdalena expressed her shock and heartbreak over the intense backlash Cierra has faced, including claims that people may have called ICE on the family, which she found "appalling."

Magdalena, who has been a pillar of support for Cierra, stated that the family’s immigrant status makes the accusations even more difficult to comprehend. She added that her granddaughter’s character has been misjudged by the public, emphasizing that the family is rooted in values of respect and understanding. Magdalena also noted that the backlash has affected them all deeply, leaving her feeling heartbroken to see Cierra endure such severe online hate.

Cierra was removed from the show after a past post resurfaced in which she used a racial slur. Following her exit, Cierra posted an apology video on July 9, expressing deep remorse for her actions. In the video, Cierra acknowledged that she had naively used an offensive term in the past, which she now realizes caused significant harm. She addressed the Asian community specifically, saying, “I want to start by addressing not just anyone I’ve hurt but most importantly the entire Asian community.” Cierra admitted that she was unaware of the word's harmful history and impact, stating, “Intent doesn’t excuse ignorance.”

Cierra also spoke about the emotional toll the backlash has taken on her family, revealing that they have received threats, and her family feels unsafe in their own home. She stated that while no apology could undo the harm caused, her actions moving forward will demonstrate her growth.

Magdalena also commented on Cierra’s apology, calling it heartfelt and sincere, and emphasized that the young woman’s actions going forward would speak louder than words.
