Kevin Durant has officially joined the Houston Rockets in a record-breaking seven-team NBA trade

Kevin Durant has joined the Houston Rockets from the Phoenix Suns in a record-breaking seven-team trade, the most complex player swap in NBA history.

The deal, involving a total of 13 players and multiple draft picks, was finalised on July 6 as the NBA’s new league year began, confirming speculation that had swirled since reports of the move first emerged last month.

In addition to the Rockets and Suns, the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves and Los Angeles Lakers all played a part in the transaction, surpassing the previous record of a six-team trade set last summer.

Durant, 36, brings a decorated CV to Houston.

The veteran forward was named NBA Most Valuable Player in 2014, has earned 15 All-Star selections, and won two championships during his time with the Warriors. He is also a four-time Olympic gold medallist with the United States.

“My time in Phoenix has come to an end,” Durant wrote on social media. “All these stops along the journey have really impacted me in a positive way… Houston, can’t wait!”

Rockets head coach Ime Udoka welcomed the arrival of a player widely considered one of the sport’s all-time greats.

“His skill level, love of basketball and dedication to his craft have made him one of the most respected players of his generation,” Udoka said. “We’re excited to work with him.”

Houston, who finished second in the Western Conference last season, were knocked out in the first round of the play-offs and will hope Durant’s arrival propels them deeper into the post-season.

Phoenix, meanwhile, paid tribute to Durant’s brief but significant impact.

“One of the greatest to ever play the game, we are grateful for the impact Kevin made on our organisation and in our community,” Suns general manager Brian Gregory said. “As a Sun, he joined the elite ranks by reaching 30,000 career points.”

Full trade breakdown:

  • Houston Rockets received Kevin Durant and centre Clint Capela, 31, who returns to the team after starting his career there.

  • Phoenix Suns acquired young South Sudanese prospect Khaman Maluach, the 10th overall pick in this year’s draft, along with Dillon Brooks, Jalen Green, and five additional players including Daeqwon Plowden, Rasheer Fleming and Koby Brea. Two future draft picks were also included.

  • Atlanta Hawks gained David Roddy, cash considerations, and a 2031 draft pick swap from Houston.

  • Brooklyn Nets secured two future second-round picks while sending forward Adou Thiero to the Lakers.

  • Golden State Warriors picked up Australian forward Alex Toohey and guard Jahmai Mashack.

  • Minnesota Timberwolves landed 18-year-old centre Rocco Zikarsky and two future draft selections.

  • Los Angeles Lakers received a draft pick and Thiero from Brooklyn.

The complexity and scale of the transaction reflect the shifting priorities of teams as they retool for the 2025–26 season - and underscore Houston’s intent to contend at the highest level with Durant at the core.
