Dancers stepped into the centre of a circular, defined by the crowd surrounding it, in ones and twos and showed off their dance moves.
Eight teams of five performers each from across Karachi are battling in the break-dancing competition. In July, the Act One management contacted teams through Facebook and asked them to come and audition. “Over 200 people showed up,” said Asma Ansari, a representative of Act One.
The Freestyle Blood Crew, Extreme Motion Crew and Unknown Crew are some of the teams well recognised in the tournament.
The registration fee is Rs100 per head and the teams must have five members. Each Sunday one team will be eliminated till the winners are left. “Break dancing is not well recognised in Pakistan,” said a participant.
“But we will show the world that we too can dance, through media coverage and verbal promotion of the concept.”
Claiming that this is the first time such an event is taking place in the country Asma continued to say, “The talented youth that we have stumbled across is unbelievable. Our opening function has been a success so we have high hopes.”

Well....Its an awesome idea having this dance in Pakistan ..It shows that our country is the best where talent is concerned...My nephews are one of the best there dancers..His name is Duane Lucas... They need full support as they are gifted with such good talent ..God Bless!! & Good Luck guys....
All these b-boys and b-girls are very talented . We should give them a chance to prove their wonderful talent . Most people think that dance is a useless activity . Let me clear this it is not just jumping around . Dance has vocabulary, it is gifted to very few people and instead of criticizing them we should appreciate them for what they have. And what they have is simply amazing . They need our support, the support of their people and if we don't support them then it is very shameful for us . We all should promote and support our youth !!
@Kulamarva Balakrishna: This is called " lagi, woh bhi barray zor sey!"
@Kulamarva Balakrishna:
I suggest you watch ARY TV's Nachle for co-ed dance contests.
What a shame. The whole Sind province surrounding Karachi is flooded and these youths are busy in useless activities.
poor youth of Pakistan...they want all of us to be like them away from religion and hiding from the severe situation of the country. Media has completely spoiled this nation's morals and values. At one side we have religious extremists killing everyone for no reason and at one side we have liberal/secular extremists promoting vulgarity nudity dance parties dating etc etc. Media uff Media!!
Asma Ansari sent me and she is awesome :-)
Good stuff. Lets hope we can get some of these crews into the local film and media industry productions to further promote Pakistan's talent. Props to whoever set this up.
It was an awesome event. ActOne rockx:) Please Promote Popping And Locking As well :)
This IS INDEED the first bboy event held at this scale. we've had one or two in ISB but that was NOT breakdancing. mostly poppers who call themselves breakdancers. it's a COMPLETELY different type of dance.
If Act one extended into Islamabad and Lahore, It's UNBELIEVABLE the amount of talent we have here. I myself hosted a breakdance event in Lahore this past Eid

Vienna,19-09-2011 May be it is the first all male back break military dance in the whole world.Let the Pakistani young women join the competition in equal numbers and then put up banners. Give a chance to young women. That will heal Pakistan from Mullah fever that it is suffering from, today. Taravadu Taranga Trust for Media Monitoring TTTMM India --Kulamarva Balakrishna
Excuse me; it's not the first Break-Dance Competition in Karachi. The first one was held back in the mid 80's at Arts Council.
