Fans of Netflix’s cult-favourite crime series Mindhunter may have reason to hope once more. Holt McCallany, who portrayed FBI agent Bill Tench in the show, recently revealed that conversations have taken place about reviving the series but not as a traditional show. Speaking to Comic Book Resources, McCallany shared that director and executive producer David Fincher has discussed the possibility of turning Mindhunter into a trilogy of feature-length films.

“I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago,” McCallany said. “He told me there’s a chance it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it’s just a chance. I know there are writers who are working, but David has to be happy with the scripts.”

Originally premiering in 2017, Mindhunter gained critical acclaim for its dark, psychological storytelling and meticulous period detail. Set in the late 1970s, the series followed FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (McCallany), along with psychologist Wendy Carr (Anna Torv), as they developed criminal profiling techniques by interviewing notorious serial killers. Season 2 aired in 2020, but the series was put on indefinite hold in 2023 due to Fincher’s other commitments.

McCallany expressed both gratitude for the original series and cautious optimism for its potential return. “I felt very fortunate and privileged to have gotten to do that show at all,” he said. “I would love it if it were to return. Like I said, he gave me a little bit of hope - but the sun, the moon, and the stars would all have to align.”

While nothing is confirmed yet, the update offers fans a glimmer of hope that Mindhunter's gripping story might still continue - just in a different format.
