HEC director's dismissal challenged

.

ISLAMABAD:

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday issued notices to the respondents in a petition challenging the dismissal of Dr Ziaul Qayyum, Executive Director of the Higher Education Commission (HEC).

Justice Inaam Ameen Minhas of the IHC heard the petition, seeking Dr Qayyum's reinstatement. During the proceedings, Advocate Imran Shafiq appeared on behalf of the petitioner.

Advocate Shafiq requested the court to issue a restraining order, stating that the HEC had already advertised the vacancy for the executive director position. However, Justice Inaam remarked, "Let the respondents submit their comments first; we will consider the matter afterwards." He further stated, "We cannot issue a restraining order at this stage. The Supreme Court has given clear directions that courts should not interfere in the functioning of institutions, including the HEC. We will serve notice and seek a response."

The petitioner's counsel argued that Dr Ziaul Qayyum was appointed for a four-year term in line with the commission's administrative rules, and that his removal was unlawful. He also requested the court to schedule an early hearing within a week.

Justice Inaam assured that the next date for the hearing would be included in the written order
