TikTok’s new feature introduces in-app guided meditation aimed at helping users wind down at night. The update encourages better screen time habits by interrupting late-night use with calming exercises that support healthier sleep routines.
For users under 18, the feature activates automatically after 10 p.m. If teens are still scrolling, TikTok replaces their feed with a full-screen meditation prompt featuring soft music and breathing guidance. If ignored, a second message reinforces the suggestion to log off and rest.
Adult users can opt into the feature by toggling “sleep hours” in the app’s Screen Time settings and selecting their preferred start time for nightly reminders.
The launch follows criticism over TikTok’s impact on young people’s wellbeing, particularly concerns about sleep disruption, anxiety and addictive usage patterns. Lawmakers, including District of Columbia Attorney General Brian Schwalb, have raised issues about the platform’s influence, prompting TikTok to roll out additional safety and wellness tools.
TikTok’s latest effort reflects broader trends in tech, where platforms are increasingly expected to balance engagement with user health. The meditation feature offers a simple, built-in way for users to disengage before bed, aligning with digital wellness goals.
