Pakistan may block Google, Youtube to deny terrorists communication source
The Interior Minister who was talking to media men at the FIA headquarters on Saturday urged the internet service providers to extend their help to the government for exterminating the menace of terrorism from the country.
Talking to mediamen here at FIA headquarters, he said the government would be compelled to block certain internet service provider’s sites, if they did not extend cooperation to the government.
Malik said that Taliban and other terrorist organisations were sharing intelligence through internet and curbing these activities was imperative.
Elimination of grey networks
Further steps would be taken to improve the performance of FIA and competent lawyers would be selected for the legal branch, he said.
He said he has directed the FIA to eliminate gray traffic. In future the circle head of FIA and relevant PTA officials would be held responsible for gray traffic in their areas.
Speaking on the occasion Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Dr Mohammad Yaseen said that during the last two years 44 raids have been conducted against gray traffic and 102 persons have been arrested.
PTA had recently blocked private browsing in an attempt to disrupt terrorist communications.
Malik said that evidence showed that terrorists involved in the recent bomb blast in the Mumbai had used internet servers based in the US to communicate.

That would not be of any benefit whatsoever. You have to realize that his statements regarding anything tech or sci-fi are nothing but random blabbering of words he is able to recall.
Deep packet inspection is mainly suited for, and is used to target bittorrent traffic. If they want to "monitor" what people are searching for or watching on youtube, they certainly don't require any deep packet inspection. And any "terrorist" worth a dime who wants to use Internet to communicate would either use encryption or would not use Internet in the first place. And on that note, the recent ban on VPN by PTA seems more like a stupid short-sighted effort to stop VoIP services, the unfortunate target of legitimate uses of that for secure communications is something PTA or our government couldn't care less about.

I guess nobody here has heard of a little thing called VPN! who cares if he blocks google / youtube / whatever. People who need to use a service will get access to it via these widely available VPN services to by-pass even the ISP proxies!

I think this is a good move. It is through uncontrolled Western tools like Google and YouTube that the country is being gradually corrupted and turned away from Islam. This move will remind people what their true purpose in this life is and just a hint, it is not to surf Google or watch dirty picture and videos on YouTube.

I fully support Dr Rehman Malik. We are living in a country where we dont have railway, electricity, gas, diesel, health facilities. We dont deserve to have the luxuries of internet. Internet can be used as communication so it should be banned. And if possible we should also ban mobile and land line phones too. We should dump containers on all the major and minor roads of Pakistan so that terrorists couldnot move about freely. And if we remove the foodstuff from markets... just imagine how safe we will be as terrorists will die of hunger them self. Every sensible citizen will agree with me.
Action without information! Blocking facebook was a silly decision. Now it this happens, Pakistan should say Bye Bye to Information Technology sector business in Pakistan.

Someone tell Malik that terrorist networks are also using sophisticated Satellite Phones to communicate. Instead of fighting terrorism they just block Motor bikes, VPN, Internet. Shame.

1) He could reform the School syllabus and make madrassas illegal or atleast reform them. 2) Hunt down anti-India terrorists like Hafiz Saeed, who preach openly a violent Jihad. 3) Go after North Waziristan to destroy Terrorist Safe Havens.

A single fabricated video can play havoc.....just remember the killing of a person by a Ranger Personnell in Karachi and how it spread the same and even more level of Panic can be created by a fabricated video.......
these websites should be controlled and continuously monitored if not blocked and there should be a Team in FIA/ISI which should check continuously these websites and if no cooperations comes then they should be bloacked Temporarily (when required)

No worries if google and youtube are blocked, there is always baidu.com and youku.com. In fact you can just relax and outsource such work and your cyber security to china . They will happily oblige for free. In case they ask for fees, you can always give them more parts of kashmir and few ports, some agricultural land and some jungles for hunting trips.

I think Rehman Malik should make his own agencies accountable rather than expecting google to do his bidding. Security agencies and intelligence agencies are spending millions and billions without delivering any tangible results. They were used by Mush to extend his tenure and for suppressing opposition leaders. They have rendered valuable service to the US in return for dollars but failed terribly at home front.

Blocking these sites will only further isolate Pakistanis; especially those who rely on the sites to obtain vital information to assist in work and study. Further, it is essential that Pakistanis join the international community (something they are currently not a party to!). These sites provide an worthwhile platform to interact and learn about other cultures, religions and societies - something Pakistanis are woefully ignorant of.

A better and much more targeted approach would be to implement Deep Packet Inspection. Although I have strong reservations in its usage with regards to privacy, however it is still a much better step compared to blocking whole domains. Mr. Malik would also do well to make sure that access to militant propaganda easily available online and in bazaars and delivered through sermons, and taught in madrassas is restricted.
It will be Pakistan's loss not Google or Youtube's.

Privacy comes first! The Pakistan government should work within the legal framework to subpoena ISPs when credible information is at hand and the ISPs should disclose instances (not necessarily the details) of such attempts to access customer usage.
