Around 100 firefighters are battling a significant blaze at an electrical substation on Aberdeen Place in St John’s Wood, North West London.
The fire began around 5:30 am (local time) and has produced thick smoke visible for miles across the city.
Emergency services received over 100 calls from the public, with footage showing flames and smoke billowing above the Westminster area.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.
Fire crews from Paddington and Euston stations are on site using turntable ladders and foam units to suppress the flames.
Station Commander Paul Morgan, speaking from the scene, described the fire as “highly visible” and urged local residents to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke.
Despite the dramatic scenes, UK Power Networks confirmed that power supplies to homes and businesses have not been interrupted.
“This has not interrupted power supplies. Our teams are working with the fire service to make the equipment safe,” a spokesperson said.
Air quality in the area is being monitored by a scientific advisor as firefighting efforts are expected to continue throughout the day.
This is the second major substation fire in London this year. A previous incident in Hayes led to a temporary shutdown at Heathrow Airport. Authorities have not indicated any link between the two events.
Aberdeen Place, the location of today’s fire, sits near key London landmarks including Regent’s Park and Lord’s Cricket Ground.
London Fire Brigade is continuing to update the public and has advised against travel in the immediate area.
