KARACHI:

Medical experts said that just like children, adults also need vaccinations to prevent treatable diseases and reduce mortality yet there is no vaccination programme available in Pakistan for adults.

Associate Professor at Aga Khan University Hospital Dr Iffat Khanam said that during the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccination reduced the severity of the disease. However, there is still a lack of healthcare facilities and awareness about adult vaccination.

She said that World Immunization Week is being observed, but while there is a focus on childhood vaccinations, adult vaccinations are being neglected. There are many infections for which vaccines are available, but in Pakistan, there are no centres for adult vaccinations, nor is there any specific programme in place for adults.

The pneumococcal vaccine is given to prevent pneumonia, which is necessary for persons with respiratory or kidney disease, diabetes, or those over 60 years of age. Influenza is a viral infection that peaks in September and October, and getting a flu vaccine can provide protection.

Hepatitis B is common in Pakistan, which not only causes liver damage but also increases the risk of liver cancer. However, getting vaccinated against Hepatitis B can provide protection.
