Netflix’s latest true crime documentary, A Deadly American Marriage, explores the complex and tragic case of Jason Corbett’s death in 2015. The film revisits the night Corbett was killed and the years of accusations that followed.

Jason Corbett, an Irish widower who had relocated to North Carolina with his two children, was building a new life with his second wife, Molly Martens. However, their seemingly idyllic family life came to a violent end when Corbett was found dead from blunt-force trauma, with a baseball bat believed to have been used during the fatal encounter.

The new documentary, produced and directed by Jessica Burgess and Jenny Popplewell, features interviews with Molly Martens, her father Thomas Martens, and Corbett’s children, who were just eight and ten years old at the time of his death. Prosecutors, investigators, and others closely connected to the case also offer their perspectives.

The film poses critical questions: Was Jason Corbett the victim of a calculated act of violence, or was the tragedy the result of an act of self-defence?

Investigators and prosecutors involved in the case provide critical insight into the circumstances surrounding Jason Corbett’s death, sharing evidence, courtroom experiences, and their interpretations of what unfolded that night. As one investigator notes in the trailer, “It was one of the bloodiest crime scenes I’ve seen in a long time.”

Netflix promises the documentary will “shed a bright light on the many questions that have lingered since the shocking events of that night,” encouraging audiences to reconsider what they think they know about this haunting case.

A Deadly American Marriage will be available for streaming worldwide on Netflix starting 9 May.
