RAWALPINDI:

Traders have demanded the restoration of public toilets at Fawara Chowk, Rawalpindi, following reports of the facility being illegally occupied by influential individuals.

The Anjuman Tajiran Namak Mandi (ATNM) has decided to take the matter directly to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, ATNM President Malik Tahir praised the Punjab government's beautification projects in Raja Bazaar and Fawara Chowk.

However, he stressed that the efforts remain incomplete without functional public toilets.

Tahir noted that thousands of traders and customers use this commercial hub daily, and the absence of toilets causes significant inconvenience.

He alleged that influential individuals, with the support of local authorities, have illegally occupied the space meant for public toilets, constructing shops to earn private income.

He urged the Rawalpindi commissioner to take action and restore the public utility.

The traders' association has formed a delegation that will soon meet Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz in Lahore with a single-point agenda: end the illegal occupation and reopen the public toilets for public use.

They also called on the commissioner to hold an open court in the marketplace to listen to traders' concerns and ensure government property is protected for the benefit of the public.
