LAHORE:

At least 55 people died by suicide in Lahore during the first five months of 2026, raising concerns among mental health experts and social welfare advocates about the growing psychological and socioeconomic pressures facing residents of the provincial capital.

Data compiled by the Edhi Foundation shows that between January 1 and May 31, a total of 55 suicide cases were reported in the city.

The victims included 47 men and eight women, indicating that men accounted for the overwhelming majority of the deaths.

According to Edhi Foundation spokesperson Younis Bhatti, January recorded the highest number of suicides during the period under review, with 14 people taking their own lives, including 11 men and three women.

In February, 12 suicides were reported, comprising 11 men and one woman. The number declined in March, when six cases were recorded, including five men and one woman. However, the trend rose again in the following months.

April witnessed 10 suicide deaths, including nine men and one woman, while May recorded 13 cases, with 11 men and two women among the deceased.
