Green Day’s headlining set at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 12 took an unexpected turn when a firework misfired and struck a nearby palm tree, causing it to catch fire.
The incident occurred during the band’s performance at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. The pyrotechnic mishap sent a shockwave through the crowd, and a video circulating on social media showed flames rising from the palm tree as firefighters quickly arrived to put out the blaze.
While it remains unclear whether anyone was injured, a concertgoer took to X, saying, “A firework just exploded next to me and all my friends at Coachella. I can’t hear out of my right ear, multiple people hurt. That was f***ing insane, I thought it was a terrorist attack.” The explosion shocked many, and event organizers immediately instructed people to evacuate the area.
Green Day’s performance, which marked their debut at Coachella, was otherwise a career-defining moment for the punk rock band. Known for their iconic album American Idiot, Green Day treated fans to a mix of their classic hits and newer tracks from their latest album, Saviors. The night was also notable for Armstrong’s guest appearances with other artists, including a performance with The Go-Go's earlier in the weekend.
Despite the scare, Green Day’s show went on, with the band showcasing their energetic stage presence and hitting all the high notes. Coachella continues to draw crowds over its two-weekend run, featuring additional performances by Lady Gaga, Post Malone, Travis Scott, and several others.
