Actor Eric Dane has announced that he has been diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), a progressive and currently incurable neurological disease.

The 52-year-old star revealed the diagnosis in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE on April 10, 2025.

"I have been diagnosed with ALS,” Dane said. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.” He is married to actress Rebecca Gayheart, and the couple share two daughters, Billie Beatrice (15) and Georgia Geraldine (13).

Despite the serious nature of his diagnosis, Dane confirmed he intends to keep working. He is scheduled to return to filming season 3 of HBO’s Euphoria on April 14, where he portrays Cal Jacobs, the complex patriarch of the Jacobs family. “I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set,” Dane added. “I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”

ALS, often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, gradually weakens the muscles, impacting a person’s ability to walk, talk, eat, and breathe. According to the Mayo Clinic and the Muscular Dystrophy Association, life expectancy after diagnosis ranges from three to five years, though some individuals live much longer.

Dane joins a list of public figures who have battled ALS, including Stephen Hawking, Roberta Flack, and Kenneth Mitchell.

As he begins this difficult chapter, Dane remains focused on his work and his loved ones, using his platform to bring greater awareness to ALS and its challenges.
