Ester Dean has publicly confirmed her role in co-writing the infamous remix of Keri Hilson’s 2009 hit Turnin Me On, which many fans interpreted as a diss towards Beyoncé and Ciara.

Dean’s admission comes via a straightforward Instagram comment in response to a viral interview where Hilson revisited the controversy.

In the interview with The Breakfast Club, Hilson reflected on the track and described the experience as a “regret,” though not for the reasons long speculated. “He [Polow da Don] had another writer in our camp at the time. He had her write this,” Hilson said, referencing the remix’s contentious lyrics. “Automatically, I was like, ‘I’m not saying that.’ That was my position. I’m an athlete. I am competitive. But I’m not nasty, I’m a finesse player.”

The remix, which leaked in March 2009, included lines interpreted as directed at Beyoncé: “She can dance, she can sing, but she need to move it to the left.” Hilson had previously denied authorship of the lyrics, saying in a 2020 interview, “Was not my lyrics, was not my writing, was not my doing.”

In response to the renewed spotlight, Dean followed up with a public apology on her Instagram page, stating that the diss was "childish and didn’t age well”. She added, “I see how it hurt people, especially women, and I take full accountability.”

Dean continued by acknowledging her past and present efforts to uplift women in the industry but admitted that her history cannot be rewritten. “Despite the fact that I’ve worked with and supported many women since, that doesn’t erase this moment,” she said.
