The wait is almost over for fans of Hulu’s gripping dystopian drama, The Handmaid’s Tale. The sixth and final season is officially set to premiere on April 8, 2025, marking the end of June Osborne’s long and harrowing journey through Gilead.
In an Instagram post, star Elisabeth Moss confirmed the date, sending excitement through the show's dedicated fan base. The release comes nearly three years after the season 5 finale, delayed in part due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Adapted from Margaret Atwood’s iconic novel, The Handmaid’s Tale has chronicled the rise of a totalitarian regime that forces fertile women into childbearing servitude. The final season promises a long-awaited uprising, with June (Moss) rallying the Handmaids to fight back.
“For years, we've been afraid of them. Now, it's time for them to be afraid of us,” June declares in the official trailer, which dropped on March 19. The intense clip teases the war that’s been building for five seasons—now boiling over into full-on rebellion.
Returning cast members include O-T Fagbenle (Luke), Yvonne Strahovski (Serena Joy), Max Minghella (Nick), Ann Dowd (Aunt Lydia), Samira Wiley (Moira), and Bradley Whitford (Commander Lawrence), among others. New to the cast are Josh Charles and Timothy Simons, though details about their roles remain under wraps.
This season also signals a major change behind the scenes. Series creator Bruce Miller has stepped aside to focus on Hulu’s upcoming adaptation of The Testaments, Atwood’s sequel novel set 15 years later. In his absence, longtime producers Eric Tuchman and Yahlin Chang have taken the reins.
“We are ending our show on our own creative terms,” Miller told Entertainment Weekly. “If you hate it, it actually was on purpose. It wasn’t a mistake.”
Actress Madeline Brewer, who plays Janine, teased what’s to come: “It goes a little wild there toward the end… what the fans have been waiting six seasons for—outrageous revolution.”As the fight for freedom intensifies, the characters must decide where they stand. Moss hinted at June’s evolution, saying, “The fight is not just about one individual. It’s much larger than that.”
For fans worried this is truly the end, there’s a silver lining. Hulu has greenlit The Testaments, a follow-up series featuring younger characters navigating Gilead’s legacy.
