LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has given waste management authorities and other relevant departments a final opportunity to submit their response by April 11 regarding the proper disposal of waste and the transformation of dumping sites into environmentally friendly zones.

Justice Khalid Ishaq was presiding over the hearing when the petitioner's counsel informed the court that the current waste disposal sites were major contributors to pollution and did not meet environmental safety standards.

He argued that these sites had not been developed in line with international guidelines, posing serious risks to public health and the environment.

The counsel urged the court to direct the concerned authorities to upgrade these dumping stations in compliance with global environmental standards to mitigate pollution and safeguard public well-being.

The court sought a detailed response from the authorities.

Stray dogs

The LHC also issued a stay order preventing authorities from killing stray dogs, directing them to halt all such actions immediately.

Justice Shahid Karim, while hearing the case, also sought a response from the relevant departments regarding the alleged killing of 1,000 stray dogs in violation of the official policy, which mandates their culling through vaccination rather than lethal measures.
