A man who fell into a massive sinkhole in South Korea’s capital has been found dead, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The motorcyclist was riding in the Gangdong district when the road collapsed beneath him at around 2:30 PM on Monday.
Rescuers discovered his body approximately 50 metres (164ft) from where he fell the next day.
The sinkhole, which is 20 metres wide and deep, also caused injuries to a car driver.
Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the collapse, but poor infrastructure and excavation work are common factors in such incidents.
A widely shared dashcam video appears to show the moment the road caved in, with the motorcyclist plunging into the hole while a car narrowly escaped.
Earlier, rescuers found his mobile phone and motorbike inside the sinkhole, which contained an estimated 2,000 tonnes of soil and water.
A recent report to the Seoul city government revealed that 223 sinkholes have formed in the city over the past decade, often due to ageing infrastructure, damaged pipes, and excavation accidents.
In January, a truck driver in Japan went missing after his vehicle fell into a sinkhole, while a similar incident occurred in Malaysia last August.
