In response to media report of registration of honorary degree by Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC) president Dr Rizwan Taj, the council issued explanation on Thursday, saying the registration of honorary degree is not in violation of PM&DC policies.
In an explanation issued by the council, it stated, as per PM&DC policy formed on May 13, 2018, if an individual has a qualification of level III, the honorary degree can be registered. The registration is only for record purpose not for academic benefits.
According to documents available with Tribune, it is clearly mentioned in the minutes of July 17, 2019 PM&DC meeting that the council cannot register any honorary degree.
It is pertinent to mention that PM&DC president Dr Rizwan Taj had registered his own honorary degree in violation of the council's policies. The development sparked outrage within the medical community, with experts calling it a blatant misuse of authority and a direct attack on the credibility of the regulatory body.
