ISLAMABAD:

The excessive use of antibiotics, chemicals, and steroids to accelerate the growth of broiler chicken has raised serious health concerns among consumers, with experts warning of potential long-term risks.

Public health experts caution that the widespread use of these substances in poultry farming has contributed to the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, hormone-related disorders, and other severe health complications.

A leading public health expert, Dr Afzal Khan, said that the use of sulphonamides as growth promoters in poultry feed has been linked to serious health consequences, including respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, sudden heart failure, and tumor growth. "Approximately 90% of broiler chickens today contain antibiotics, chemicals, and steroids, which are administered to promote rapid growth and prevent disease. This poses significant health risks to humans," he warned.

He advised consumers to take necessary precautions when consuming chicken. "If you must eat poultry, ensure it is cooked to a minimum internal temperature of 165°F. Cooking at high temperatures can help reduce sulphonamide levels. Moreover, raw or cooked chicken should be refrigerated immediately if not being consumed," he recommended.

Nutritionist, Dr Owais Rana, warned that the impact of these substances on human health is extensive. "Antibiotic-resistant bacteria can cause life-threatening infections, while hormone-related disorders may lead to reproductive problems and even cancer," he said
