Washing hair is a routine task, but hair experts warn that common mistakes could lead to damage, frizz, or excessive oiliness.

“Hair is most fragile when it’s wet, so you have to make sure to wash it properly to avoid damage,” says Garnier ambassador and hairstylist Kat Thompson.

Here are six common hair-washing mistakes and how to fix them.

1. Using the Wrong Shampoo and Conditioner

Not all shampoos and conditioners work for every hair type. “Some people with drier or frizzier hair need more moisture, while others with finer hair need lightweight products to avoid weighing it down,” Thompson explains.

2. Overusing Clarifying Shampoo

While clarifying shampoos help remove product build-up, using them too often can strip natural oils. “You want to avoid using them too often so as not to dry out your scalp,” she advises.

3. Washing Hair Too Often

Frequent shampooing can cause the scalp to overproduce oil, leading to greasier hair. “Over-shampooing strips away natural oils, and the scalp compensates by producing more oil,” Thompson warns. Dry shampoo can help extend time between washes.

4. Not Washing Enough

While social media trends promote washing hair only once a week, experts say under-washing can lead to scalp build-up. “Not washing enough can block follicles and cause an unhealthy scalp,” Thompson says, recommending washing at least every other day based on individual needs.

5. Using Water That’s Too Hot

Hot water can strip moisture from hair, making it dry and brittle. “Although we love a hot shower, it’s better to rinse hair with lukewarm water to keep it shiny and hydrated,” she suggests.

6. Drying Hair Too Roughly

Rubbing hair with a towel can cause breakage and frizz. “Be gentle! Press the water out using a microfiber towel—it helps fine hair stay strong and curly hair stay less frizzy,” Thompson advises.

By avoiding these mistakes, experts say, hair can stay healthier, shinier, and more manageable.
