Bong Joon Ho’s latest sci-fi film, Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson, surged to the top of the South Korean box office over the weekend, securing $6.6 million in its opening debut and commanding a dominant 69.06% market share.
The film, which follows a worker who is ‘reprinted’ for dangerous tasks on a distant planetary colony, easily outperformed all competitors and marked a new high for 2025, surpassing the opening of Captain America: Brave New World. According to Kobis, the Korean Film Council’s tracking service, the total weekend earnings for the top 10 films reached $9 million, a significant increase from the previous weekend’s $4.4 million.
Mickey 17 attracted 980,549 admissions from 2,153 screens during its opening weekend, with Warner Bros. reporting a four-day total of KRW12.9 billion ($9 million). The film also benefited from a non-traditional Friday release and the national Monday holiday celebrating the Independence Movement. Notably, IMAX screenings contributed to 9% of the film’s gross.
In second place, Captain America: Brave New World earned $721,841, representing 7.47% of the market share. Despite a decline in earnings compared to the previous week, the Marvel film still drew 110,888 viewers, bringing its cumulative total to $10.5 million. Korean horror Exorcism Chronicles: The Beginning held steady in third, with $568,718 and a total of $1.7 million to date.
New releases also made their mark, with the romantic drama It’s Okay! debuting in fourth place, earning $186,691. Meanwhile, Paddington in Peru rounded out the top five, bringing its cumulative earnings to $571,143.
