Health experts have cautioned against the consumption of deep-fried foods during Ramadan, highlighting potential health risks associated with oily and high-calorie meals, Associated Press of Pakistan reported on Sunday.

As millions of Pakistanis observed the first fast of the holy month, experts urged people to choose healthier alternatives such as grilled meats, steamed vegetables, and fresh fruits instead of traditional fried items like samosas, spring rolls, and doughnuts.

“Fried foods, oily snacks, and rich desserts are a recipe for disaster, especially during Ramadan. These foods can lead to digestive issues, bloating, and discomfort,” said Dr. Talha Imad, a Pakistani nutritionist, as quoted by APP.

Pakistan, a predominantly Muslim country, has a population of over 240 million, with the majority fasting during Ramadan. Experts warn that deep-fried foods, high in fat and sodium, can worsen dehydration and digestive problems during fasting hours.

“Fasting during Ramadan can be challenging, and consuming deep-fried foods can exacerbate dehydration, digestive issues, and other health problems,” said Dr. Saima Khan. “By making informed food choices, people can ensure a healthy and blessed Ramadan.”

Dr. Imad advised breaking fasts with dates and water to restore energy and hydration. He recommended lean proteins, whole grains, and steamed vegetables as meal options and suggested fresh fruits and nuts as healthy snacks. “Limit sugary drinks and desserts,” he added, stressing the importance of balanced nutrition during Ramadan.
