Authorities investigating the deaths of legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, discovered an open prescription pill bottle and scattered pills near Arakawa’s body in their Santa Fe home. The couple, along with their deceased German Shepherd, was found on February 26 after a maintenance worker alerted authorities.

Hackman was discovered lying in the mudroom, while Arakawa was found on the bathroom floor with a space heater nearby. Her body showed advanced signs of decomposition, including bloating and mummification of her hands and feet, suggesting they had been dead for several days. Two other dogs were found alive inside the residence.

According to a search warrant affidavit, there were no immediate signs of foul play, no suicide note, and no evidence of a gas or carbon monoxide leak. However, Detective Roy Arndt noted the circumstances were suspicious enough to warrant a thorough investigation. Authorities are examining prescription medications and other potential substances found in the home.

Hackman, a two-time Oscar winner, was one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actors, known for roles in The French Connection, Unforgiven, and The Royal Tenenbaums. He had largely withdrawn from public life in recent years, focusing on painting and writing historical novels.

Friends described Hackman and Arakawa as a reclusive but deeply devoted couple. Their sudden deaths have left many unanswered questions, with autopsy results expected to provide crucial insights.
