Defending champions and hosts Pakistan were eliminated from the Champions Trophy after suffering defeats to New Zealand and India in the group stage.
With only a dead rubber against Bangladesh remaining on Thursday, Pakistan's campaign has effectively ended, marking a disappointing conclusion to their first major international cricket event on home soil in 30 years.
What went wrong?
During the Champions Trophy, there was reportedly tension between the captain and the coach, which coincided with the team's poor performance in the tournament, according to Express News report.
Mohammad Rizwan expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of consultation in key selection decisions. Rizwan had suggested including Khushdil Shah, but Aqib Javed opted to select Faheem Ashraf instead. Additionally, there were reports of a lack of coordination between the selectors and Rizwan, the report unveiled.
Before the event, PCB Chairman Naqvi had proposed revisiting the squad twice, but his suggestions were not acted upon..
Following the tournament, the PCB plans to review the team's performance and hold discussions with the management to assess mistakes and areas of improvement.
Aqib Javed, who was appointed as the interim head coach, is not expected to voluntarily resign, but he will no longer hold the position of head coach.
There is ongoing concern within the PCB regarding Babar Azam's form, as he has not performed at his usual level for over a year.
Sources also confirmed that while Aqib Javed will step down as head coach, he will continue in the role of unofficial chief selector.
