Third-seeded American Tommy Paul made a dominant start to his ATP 500 Mexican Open campaign, defeating Canadian qualifier Gabriel Diallo 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round on Monday night.
Paul needed just 72 minutes to dispatch the 23-year-old from Montreal, setting up a second-round clash with fellow American Marcos Giron, who overcame Australia’s Adam Walton 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Diallo struggled to find consistency, finishing the match with four aces, two double faults, and 26 unforced errors. He won 61 per cent of his first-serve points and just 48 per cent on his second serve.
Paul, meanwhile, was efficient throughout, despite recording no aces and three double faults. He kept his errors to 18 and won 66 per cent of first-serve points, along with 64 per cent on second serves.
Elsewhere, Canada’s Denis Shapovalov will begin his singles campaign on Tuesday against American Nishesh Basavareddy.
