Lahore High Court Rawalpindi Bench's Justice Mirza Waqas Rauf sentenced senior lawyer Muhammad Fazil Siddiqui to one month in prison for contempt of court on Friday.
The lawyer was immediately taken into custody from the courtroom and transferred to the high court police centre.
Fazil Siddiqui, a lawyer from Taxila, was representing a client in a petition hearing when he allegedly used inappropriate and offensive language.
The judge reacted strongly, issued a contempt notice on the spot, and handed down a summary sentence of one month imprisonment.
Following the verdict, lawyers inside the courtroom staged a protest.
Advocate Malik Saleh and Advocate Nadeem Shah, while lamenting the sentence argued that no one can be punished without a show-cause notice under the Constitution and law.
They called the decision unconstitutional and unethical, warning of strong protests if the ruling was not reversed.
Amid the mounting tension, the president and secretary of the High Court Bar Association Rawalpindi, along with senior lawyers, intervened to resolve the matter. After extensive discussions, Justice Mirza Waqas Rauf withdrew the contempt ruling, leading to the immediate release of Fazil Siddiqui from police custody.
