The reason behind Martin Fowler’s exit from 'EastEnders' has been revealed following the emotional live episode that aired on Thursday night.
Actor James Bye, who played the market trader for a decade, shared that the decision to kill off Martin felt "right," especially as the show marked its 40th anniversary. Having portrayed Martin since 2014, Bye explained that after ten years on the show, it was time to move on and embrace new opportunities.
Reflecting on his departure, Bye expressed his gratitude to both the fans and the 'EastEnders' team, saying, "Saying goodbye is not easy, but after 10 years on EastEnders and on the night of the show's epic 40th anniversary, the time felt right." He also acknowledged the honor of leaving the show with such a significant storyline, noting that Martin’s death would always hold a special place in his heart.
'EastEnders' boss Chris Clenshaw also discussed the decision, stressing the importance of giving Martin a "big explosive storyline" to match the character’s long-standing legacy on the show. Clenshaw praised Bye’s performance in the live episode, calling it “nothing short of outstanding.” He also recognized the emotional weight of the live broadcast and thanked Bye for his dedication over the years.
Concluding his comments, Clenshaw stated, “Although we will all miss him here at Elstree, he will always remain a member of the 'EastEnders' family. We wish him the best for the future.” While Martin’s exit marks the end of an era, his character’s impact on 'EastEnders' will remain unforgettable.
