Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck's daughter Violet distanced herself from her former stepmother, Jennifer Lopez, after feeling like a "pawn" during the couple’s divorce, an insider has revealed.
When Lopez, 55, and Affleck, 52, separated last summer, Violet surprised many by choosing to spend time with Lopez in the Hamptons and posting about Lopez's sister, Lynda Lopez, visiting her at Yale University.
This move took both of her parents by surprise, leaving them confused about the 19-year-old's actions at the time.
Sources now claim that in the months leading up to the finalization of the divorce in January, Violet began to question whether there had been hidden motives behind her close connection with Lopez.
'Violet felt like she was used as a pawn so to speak during her dad’s split from JLo,' an insider exclusively told DailyMail.com.
The source explained how Garner was careful not to restrict her daughter's relationship with Lopez’s family, saying, 'Jen supported her daughter getting close to the singer because she always puts her children first.'
However, the family found it unusual when Violet spent time with Lopez and wore her clothes, and they were also puzzled by Lynda Lopez’s visit to Violet at college.
But Jen let this slide, the source added, because she wanted Violet to be happy and respected her adult daughter's choices, even if she didn’t agree with them.
The insider revealed that Violet has since consciously decided to cut ties with Lopez and her family, largely due to seeing her father’s distress over the highly publicized divorce.
'Over time Violet started to see how upset her father was that their split was at the center of everything,' the insider explained. 'Ben never said a word about JLo.'
'Violet is highly intelligent and will ultimately always be a daddy’s girl. This is why you do not see her on public outings with JLo anymore.'
