“Severance” finally introduced outie Burt’s (Christopher Walken) husband Fields (John Noble), and in typical fashion for the show it raised as many questions as it answered.

The trio had a tense dinner and Burt and Fields home mere days after Irving was banging on their door thanks to the overtime contingency. Now Irv is being welcomed into his innie lover’s home and the sparks are still there it seems.

At dinner, Fields spends much of the time sipping wine and reminiscing with Burt. During these moments, he reveals several things about himself, their relationship timeline with Lumon, and his views on innies, which caught everyone off guard.

One of the key revelations came when Fields made a comment about their relationship timeline that raised questions. While Burt said their nickname for each other, “Attila,” came about 10 years ago, Fields insisted it was actually 20 years ago, around the time they were dining with his Lumon partner. This caused confusion for Irving, who pointed out that the first severed employee was only 12 years ago.

Burt tried to brush it off, claiming Fields had too much to drink, but both he and Irving appeared puzzled by the discrepancy. The slip-up hints that Fields may know more about Lumon’s timeline and operations than Burt or Irving do, possibly even suggesting the theory that people could be severed more than once, and that might have happened to either Burt or Fields in the past.

Another mystery arose when the show hinted that Fields might be the man seen in the opening scene of Season 2, Episode 5, pushing a cart between departments. The man’s age and mannerisms seem to match Fields, adding to the theory. It’s also possible that Fields is working to help severed employees, particularly considering his expressed empathy for innies during dinner, suggesting he might have sympathies for them beyond what we initially thought.

Finally, Fields' mention of his past dinner with Burt’s “Lumon partner” raises the possibility that his connection with Burt’s innie might extend beyond just professional ties. Their dynamic seems complex, and it could even suggest that Burt and Fields have a more unconventional relationship.
