The Punjab government has launched a major tree-planting initiative to combat Lahore's growing air pollution and persistent smog problem.

The ambitious project aims to create a 978-acre natural forest across the city, focusing on providing residents with fresh oxygen and cleaner air, Express News reported.

The plan includes the creation of a green belt along the banks of the River Ravi, where a total of 634,000 trees are set to be planted. So far, 144 acres have already been covered, with 105,000 trees already in place.

Maryam Aurangzeb, Senior Provincial Minister, announced that the project was a key step in the Punjab government's efforts to combat environmental degradation and provide long-term solutions for air pollution.

She emphasised that improving Lahore’s air quality and eradicating smog were top priorities for the government.

“This project will be a milestone in providing better oxygen and tackling smog in Lahore,” she said.

The project was launched by the Punjab Department of Forests and the Lahore Development Authority (RODA), with an open call to residents to actively participate in this green initiative.

Aurangzeb urged every citizen to contribute to the success of this campaign, making Lahore a cleaner, greener city.

The 978-acre forest project is seen as a significant part of the ongoing efforts towards a greener future, and it is expected to not only reduce air pollution but also promote a healthy and sustainable environment for Lahore's residents.
