Anthony Rendon’s struggles continue as the Angels third baseman undergoes hip surgery, sidelining him for a “significant” period, general manager Perry Minasian confirmed Wednesday.
The setback raises further doubts about his long-term future, with Rendon entering the sixth year of his seven-year, $245 million contract.
Since joining the Angels, Rendon has played just 257 games across five seasons, missing over 68% of matchups.
Last year, he appeared in only 57 games, posting career-worst numbers in batting average (.218), slugging percentage (.267), and OPS (.574), while failing to hit a home run.
Injuries have plagued him throughout his tenure, including multiple stints on the injured list last season.
Adding to the frustration, Rendon has openly stated baseball is not his top priority. “This is a job. I do this to make a living,” he said last year, per The Athletic.
The Angels signed Yoán Moncada as insurance, but after a 63-99 season, the team faces uncertainty at third base once again as they continue with spring training.
