Markelle Fultz is back in the NBA after signing with the Sacramento Kings, who are looking to bolster their backcourt following the trade of De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs.
Fultz, 26, went unsigned after his contract with the Orlando Magic expired last summer but now finds himself with a chance to contribute to a Kings team trying to stay competitive in the Western Conference.
The former No. 1 overall pick saw his career revitalized in Orlando after a turbulent tenure with the Philadelphia 76ers.
While injuries hampered his availability, he established himself as a solid playmaker and defender, averaging nearly 14 points, six assists, and four rebounds last season.
While Fultz is not a direct replacement for Fox, Sacramento is taking a committee approach to ball-handling duties, relying on Malik Monk, Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Domantas Sabonis to share creation responsibilities.
Known for his ability to attack the paint and create off the dribble, Fultz adds depth to the Kings’ guard rotation.
His footwork and passing instincts make him an asset in Sacramento’s high-post offense, and his length allows him to contribute defensively.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, multiple teams expressed interest in Fultz, but he chose Sacramento due to the opportunity for meaningful minutes.
As the Kings push for a playoff spot, Fultz will be looking to prove himself and earn another long-term contract in the NBA.
