RAWALPINDI:

Local authorities have decided to construct a state-of-the-art underpass to make Mall Road signal-free and resolve everyday traffic problems in Rawalpindi city and Cantonment. Work is expected to begin on February 17.

The underpass will stretch from TM Chowk (Shalimar Chowk) to MH Chowk, covering a long stretch of Mall Road, and will feature a double-barrel and a single-barrel underpass. A pedestrian path will also be included.

The City Traffic Police (CTP) have already developed a detailed traffic diversion plan to ensure smooth traffic flow during the project. Over 150 traffic wardens will be deployed for special duties.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the project to make Mall Road signal-free in the city and cantonment areas. In the initial phase, an underpass will be constructed on Mall Road between TM Shalimar Chowk and MH Hospital Chowk.

The foundation stone for the underpass is expected to be laid on February 17, with a completion period of two months. During the construction phase, traffic police have devised a detailed diversion plan to keep the traffic moving smoothly.

Rawalpindi Chief Traffic Officer Beenish Fatima confirmed that a double-barrel and a single-barrel underpass will be built on Mall Road, along with provisions for pedestrians.

She added that the long underpass from TM Chowk to MH Hospital would not only improve traffic flow on Mall Road but also on surrounding roads.

The Punjab government is rapidly advancing the project to build the underpass, and during its construction, a comprehensive traffic diversion plan has been put in place by the traffic police.

To ensure uninterrupted traffic flow, 150 additional traffic officers will be deployed, and citizens have been instructed to use alternative routes, the CTO added.

During construction, Mall Road from MH Hospital to TM Chowk will be temporarily closed. In response, traffic will be diverted to parallel Haider Road, where vehicles can easily access Murree Road and Kachehri Chowk.

According to Ms Beenish, additional staff will be stationed on alternative routes to maintain smooth traffic flow and prevent any inconvenience to the public. She urged citizens to follow the traffic police advisory and use alternative routes to avoid any issues during the construction phase.

In case of any difficulties, citizens can contact the CTP via their social media handles or helpline number.

The underpass project is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion on Mall Road and improve overall road safety in Rawalpindi city and cantonment areas. Once completed, it will facilitate smoother transportation for thousands of daily commuters and pedestrians, while also contributing to the region's infrastructure development.

Local authorities are optimistic that the project will enhance the city's traffic management system, reduce pollution, and promote economic growth in the area.
