Google is preparing to introduce a highly anticipated feature for its Messages app, allowing users to make WhatsApp video calls directly from within the app. This integration will eliminate the need to switch between apps, streamlining the video-calling process and improving overall convenience for users.
Currently, Google Messages only supports video calls through Google Meet. If Meet is not installed on a user’s device, they are prompted to download the app.
However, with the upcoming feature, users will be able to initiate WhatsApp video calls directly from the Messages app, bypassing the need to leave the platform altogether. This development was discovered within the app’s code and is expected to offer a more seamless experience for users.
The feature was found in Google Messages version 20250131, where a hidden flag within the code indicates that the integration is on the horizon. Although it is not yet publicly available, the discovery has generated excitement as it promises to simplify the video-calling experience.
When tapping the video call icon in a conversation within Google Messages, users will be given the option to initiate a video call through WhatsApp—provided that Google Meet is not already installed on their device. If Meet is not available, the WhatsApp video call feature will be automatically suggested.
In the event that the recipient does not have WhatsApp installed, the WhatsApp video call prompt will not appear. Additionally, the new feature will support video calls for one-on-one conversations only. Group video calling will continue to use Google Meet for the time being, but future updates may expand this feature to include group calls via WhatsApp.
