Ye the artist formerly known as Kanye West has deleted his X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, coinciding with the Super Bowl, following a series of controversial actions and posts.
The rapper's social media departure came just after the airing of a Super Bowl ad that drew comparisons to the Joker’s unsettling broadcasts in The Dark Knight.
In recent days, West had attracted significant backlash for his comments, that identifying as a Nazi.
When the Nazis ascended to power in 1933, Germany was home to several thousand Black individuals. The Nazi regime targeted them with harassment and persecution, as they considered Black people to be racially inferior. Many were subjected to imprisonment, forced sterilisation, and even killed by the Nazis.
Additionally, he voiced support for his long-time friend and rival Sean "Diddy" Combs, who is currently in federal custody.
Before deactivating his account, West posted a farewell message, thanking X owner Elon Musk for giving him a platform to share his thoughts.
He likened his time on the platform to a "spiritual journey" and concluded with, "Good afternoon and goodnight."
The rapper's exit from X came just after his controversial Super Bowl ad aired nationwide.
In the commercial, West claimed he spent all the production funds on dental work, resulting in a low-budget ad filmed on an iPhone. He directed viewers to visit his website, Yeezy.com.
The ad quickly garnered attention on X, with some users, like "kira," drawing comparisons to The Dark Knight scene where the Joker disrupts Gotham with a chaotic broadcast.
Other users shared side-by-side images of West’s commercial and Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker, highlighting the eerie similarities.
Prior to his departure, X had placed a warning on West’s profile, noting "potentially sensitive content" due to his recent antisemitic posts.
In one such post, West had written, "I'm a Nazi. I don’t like or trust any Jewish person," further fueling the outrage.
Amid the growing controversy, which also included calls for the release of Diddy from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, West’s account was flagged by the platform.
Eventually, West chose to delete the account himself, marking yet another chapter in his history of unpredictable and erratic behavior online.
