Reese Witherspoon has shut down speculation about a rumored falling-out with fellow actress Kate Winslet. Addressing the claims, Witherspoon, 48, took to her Instagram Story on February 1 to clarify the situation.

“Hey guys, [I] just spoke to my very dear friend, Kate W.,” she wrote. “We laughed about this stupidity. Please do not believe the internet.”

Witherspoon further dismissed the rumors, stating, “We are good friends and have never had any falling-out.”

The speculation began earlier this week when resurfaced footage from the actresses’ joint appearance at the 2007 BAFTAs led online users to theorize that their friendship had soured. However, Witherspoon directly refuted these claims, calling them “completely UNTRUE” and “so silly.”

This is not the first time Witherspoon has spoken about awkward moments in Hollywood. In a recent interview with People, she recalled an incident in which she unintentionally offended a fellow actress while presenting her with an award.

“So this friend of mine, who I didn’t really know that well, asked me to give her an award,” Witherspoon explained. “I thought it was, like, a roast. So I got up and I roasted her.”

She revealed that the setting was more formal than she expected, leading to an embarrassing moment that ultimately caused the actress to stop speaking to her. Witherspoon did not disclose the individual’s name but confirmed they were no longer friends.

Despite this incident, Witherspoon maintains close friendships with Hollywood stars such as Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Aniston, and Will Ferrell, with whom she stars in You’re Cordially Invited.

At the time of writing, Winslet has not publicly commented on the situation.
