HARIPUR:

Local kite association on Saturday urged the district administration to ensure the Lahore High Court (LHC)'s orders which authorised 21 kite vendors to sell kites and string.

The association's president, Tahir Mehmood said that the court issued an order last year, allowing 21 kite vendors to continue selling kites in the city and instructing the police and district administration not to harass them.

According to him, following the LHC's directives, former Assistant Commissioner Faraz Qureshi conducted regular inspections of the registered kite vendors' shops and businesses every week.

Mehmood appealed to the DC to continue these inspections on their shops, assuring that they are not involved in any illegal activities or selling dangerous materials such as metallic threads.

Furthermore, the association's office-bearer urged action against individuals who have set up illegal operations in Haripur to sell kites and strings to vendors from Punjab and use residential homes and warehouses for storage.

The association, Mehmood, emphasised that registered kite vendors in Haripur are not involved in any illegal activity.

Sources, on the other hand, say kites and threads are being smuggled from Haripur to areas like Taxila, Hassan Abdal, and Rawalpindi, with police officials allegedly taking bribes at checkpoints to allow kites and strings to pass into Punjab. While there is no ban on kite sales in Haripur, the sale of metallic thread remains prohibited, they add.
