A gas tanker explosion at an illegal LPG warehouse in Multan’s Hamid Pur Kanora area killed at least six people and injured 31, local authorities confirmed on Monday.

The explosion occurred during refilling operations at the Industrial Estate, triggering a massive fire and sending debris into nearby residential areas.

Among the dead are a minor girl and two women, while 13 of the injured remain in critical condition.

The blast reduced 20 homes to rubble and partially damaged 70 others.

Livestock was also killed in the explosion, which occurred in the early hours of the morning. Debris from the tanker caused significant destruction in surrounding areas, with fragments landing on rooftops and streets.

Multan City Police Officer (CPO) Sadiq Ali stated that gas was leaking from one of the valves before the tanker exploded.

Many residents had already evacuated after noticing the gas odour.

More than ten firefighting vehicles and foam-based fire suppression equipment were deployed to control the blaze.

An emergency has been declared at Nishtar Hospital, where rescue officials are working around the clock to treat the injured.

Gas and electricity in the area were temporarily suspended as a safety precaution, though traffic has resumed on Multan-Muzaffargarh Road.

Authorities confirmed that the explosion took place at an illegal LPG refilling warehouse.

The tanker was reportedly transferring smuggled LPG to smaller bowsers and cylinders at the site.

Five other bowsers at the warehouse were destroyed in the explosion.

Police and rescue teams are conducting search operations in adjacent areas to ensure safety.

Residents have been advised to avoid the blast site due to lingering gas in the air.
