Khabib commends Ireland for its support of Palestine following Usman Nurmagomedov’s win over Paul Hughes

Khabib Nurmagomedov was at ringside ahead of his cousin Usman's title defence on Saturday. Speaking after Usman retained the Bellator Lightweight Championship on Saturday, Nurmagomedov addressed the crowd to express his respect for Ireland.

“I know this is not my time to talk, but I just want to say one thing,” said Nurmagomedov. “With all the things between me and (Conor McGregor) when we were fighting, don’t forget, Ireland is the biggest supporter in the world for Palestine. Don’t forget about this. We love you guys—your people, your government, everybody. MMA is all about respect.”

The event, framed as an extension of the Ireland-Dagestan rivalry sparked by Khabib and McGregor's 2018 clash, ended with the Dagestani fighters dominating. However, Nurmagomedov took the opportunity to show goodwill, seemingly closing the chapter on the heated feud.

Hughes, visibly upset after his points loss to the unbeaten Usman, reflected on his performance. “I’m so gutted, I really thought I won that one. I should have pushed harder. Next time, we’re going to fight again, no question. So much respect to Usman,” he said.

Writing on X (formerly Twitter) after the fight, Khabib also invited Hughes to his native Dagestan after the fight.

A devout Muslim, Nurmagomedov has consistently voiced his support for Palestine, particularly during heightened tensions in the region. Considered one of MMA’s all-time greats, Khabib retired in 2020 with an undefeated 29-0 record, solidifying his legacy.

Nurmagomedov’s heartfelt words showcased his admiration for the Irish people, highlighting a moment of unity beyond the rivalry that has defined his MMA journey.
