Universities in Sindh to continue suspension of classes on Wednesday

The Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA) has resolved to continue its boycott of academic activities on Wednesday, stressing their commitment to safeguarding the autonomy and dignity of higher education institutions.

Further decisions regarding the protest will be made during an online meeting scheduled for January 22, according to Express News.

An online meeting of FAPUASA Sindh was held via Zoom today to discuss the ongoing protest against proposed amendments to the Universities Act and related policies introduced by the Sindh government.

During the meeting, FAPUASA Sindh expressed deep concerns over attempts by the Sindh government to amend the Universities Act, particularly the proposal to appoint bureaucrats, without academic qualifications, to the position of vice-chancellor in public sector universities.

These amendments pose a significant threat to the academic freedom of universities, which should be led by qualified academics. FAPUASA Sindh reiterated the following demands to the Sindh government:

Withdraw the proposed amendments to the Universities Act

Reverse the directive transferring the authority for issuing "No Objection Certificates" (NOCs) for faculty foreign visits from vice-chancellors to the Universities and Boards Department

Revoke the notification for future faculty appointments to be made on a contract basis, which undermines job security and discourages educators

Resolve the issue of tax rebate for university teachers

FAPUASA Sindh acknowledged the unwavering solidarity of university faculty and the support of media, political leaders, and other stakeholders in highlighting these critical issues. Their efforts have drawn national and international attention to the matter.

The association urged the Sindh government to act responsibly, abandon the proposed amendments, and respect the autonomy and academic dignity of universities. Teachers’ concerns should be addressed through meaningful dialogue.

It was decided in the meeting that if these demands are not met, FAPUASA Sindh will be forced to intensify its protest to safeguard the sanctity of the academic environment in the province.
