The Pakistani diaspora, one of the largest communities abroad, has always played a vital role in shaping the global perception of Pakistan. With over nine million Pakistanis living outside the country, this community has served as an important bridge between Pakistan and the world. From contributing billions in remittances to representing the country in various professional and cultural spheres, the diaspora has the potential to be an asset for Pakistan's reputation, economy and global alliances. However, the growing polarisation within its ranks is raising serious concerns.

In recent years, some segments of the diaspora have become increasingly driven by political affiliations or external agendas, overshadowing their role as cultural ambassadors. Instead of fostering unity, their actions have led to the dissemination of divisive narratives, tarnishing Pakistan's image internationally. When those seen as the face of Pakistan abroad appear divided or embroiled in internal political strife, it undermines the nation's credibility on global platforms.

The diaspora's potential to represent Pakistan globally must remain above party politics. They are not assets of political factions but of the state itself. By focusing on Pakistan's growth, education and global contributions, they can attract respect and opportunities for the country. For instance, in 2022, the diaspora played a crucial role in raising $1.2 billion for flood relief, showcasing the power of collective action. Similarly, remittances from overseas Pakistanis reached $26 billion in FY23, serving as a lifeline for Pakistan's struggling economy. These achievements underline the positive influence the diaspora can exert when united under a common vision.

Yet, there is a growing concern over a vocal minority within the diaspora hijacking the narrative. This segment, often driven by narrow political interests or personal grievances, has diverted attention from meaningful contributions. Social media campaigns and public demos, instead of promoting Pakistan's culture and progress, have become tools for advancing divisive agendas. This behaviour not only limits the diaspora's potential but also harms Pakistan's interests, both diplomatically and economically.

Unwittingly, some members of the diaspora damage Pakistan's image by engaging in one-sided narratives, spreading misinformation or aligning with hostile foreign actors. This amplifies negative stereotypes and fuels mistrust, further complicating Pakistan's international relations. For example, politically charged rhetoric and polarised views weaken the country's ability to secure foreign investment and build strong international partnerships.

The diaspora must remember its role as a bridge between Pakistan and the world. In countries like the UAE, where Pakistani expats contribute $6 billion annually in remittances, the diaspora's collective efforts strengthen ties with host nations. Similarly, investments by the diaspora in Pakistani startups, real estate and infrastructure have driven economic growth. Programmes like Roshan Digital Accounts have further enabled overseas Pakistanis to support their homeland while reaping financial benefits themselves.

Beyond economic contributions, the diaspora plays an essential role in fostering cultural and diplomatic connections. The professional achievements of Pakistanis in fields like medicine, engineering and academia enhance the country's global reputation. However, this influence can only be fully realised if the diaspora remains united and focused on promoting Pakistan's collective interests rather than fragmented political loyalties.

It is time for Pakistanis abroad to unite around a shared vision of progress, moving away from divisive agendas that have undermined the nation's global standing. By embracing values of civility, unity and professionalism, they can help inspire pride and respect for Pakistan on the world stage.

By staying apolitical and focusing on fostering global goodwill, Pakistanis abroad can drive tangible outcomes, such as increased investment, tourism and innovation. Ultimately, such concerted efforts can unlock Pakistan's full potential, ensuring a brighter future for the country on the global stage.
