The View co-host Joy Behar has voiced her disapproval of Carrie Underwood’s decision to perform at Donald Trump’s inauguration, calling it “normalizing” the actions of the former president.
Underwood, who had kept her political views private until her performance announcement by Trump’s transition team, explained her reasoning: “I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event,” she shared with the Daily Beast. “I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”
Behar, however, disagreed with Underwood’s stance.
“She says, ‘I love our country.’ How do you love your country and support and normalize somebody who was a convicted felon who really wants to destroy the country, in my opinion?” Behar questioned. “I don’t understand how you say you love your country at the same time that you normalize this convicted felon.”
Co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Alyssa Farah Griffin, and Sunny Hostin, however, appeared to be more accepting of Underwood’s decision.
“People do what they do for whatever reasons...If I believe I have the right to make up my mind to go perform someplace, I believe they have the same right,” Whoopi Goldberg remarked about Underwood's polarizing decision.
Though Behar and Underwood have different perspectives, their disagreement underscores the complex intersection of politics and entertainment, where celebrities are regularly challenged to navigate their personal beliefs and public image.
