Whoopi Goldberg has voiced her support for singer Carrie Underwood, despite the controversy surrounding her decision to perform "America the Beautiful" at Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20. In a recent interview on The View, Goldberg stated that she stands behind Underwood, even though she personally will not be watching the inauguration or the performance. and has been vocal in her opposition to Trump for years.

“People do what they do for whatever reason,” Goldberg remarked, emphasizing that public figures have the right to navigate their political choices as they see fit. She pointed to the example of MSNBC hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski meeting with Trump after his presidential election victory, noting that this was another instance where individuals made their own decisions regarding politics.

“I stand behind her,” Goldberg said of Underwood. “If I believe I have the right to make up my mind to go perform somewhere, I believe [she has] the same right. I have to support. It doesn’t mean I’m particularly interested. I won’t be watching, but that’s just me.”

“I think art is art and you have a right to perform where you want to perform,” added Goldberg’s The View co-host Sunny Hostin. Echoing Goldberg's sentiment, Hostin mentioned she also had no intention of watching Underwood or the inauguration, instead opting for a “spa day.”

Goldberg’s comments highlight the broader conversation about political involvement in entertainment and the complex dynamics between public figures, their personal beliefs, and their professional decisions.
