Walmart has recalled over 12,000 cartons of its Great Value Family Size Chicken Broth due to packaging failures that may compromise the product’s sterility, posing potential spoilage risks.

The voluntary recall, announced by the FDA, involves 48-ounce cartons distributed to 242 Walmart stores across Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.

Affected cartons carry the lot code 98F09234, UPC 007874206684, and a “Best if Used by” date of March 25, 2026. Customers are advised to check their pantry for these identifiers.

The issue stems from a potential seal defect discovered during production, which could lead to contamination by air and moisture. While no illnesses or complaints have been reported, packaging failures can allow bacterial growth, making the product unsafe for consumption.

The broth, manufactured by TreeHouse Foods at its Maryland facility, was recalled on December 11, 2024. However, public notification was delayed due to the lack of a formal press release from TreeHouse Foods. The recall only became widely known when it appeared in an FDA Enforcement Report emailed to media outlets on January 8, 2025.

Walmart stated that it removed all affected products immediately upon notification and confirmed compliance with recall protocols. Customers with recalled cartons can return them to Walmart for a full refund or exchange for a non-impacted product.

Consumers are urged to discard any recalled broth to avoid potential health risks. For more information, visit the FDA’s recall database or contact Walmart directly.
