One of the world’s most famous handbags, the Hermès Birkin, has long been a symbol of wealth and exclusivity. With a starting price of $7,000—and some models exceeding $400,000—this iconic status symbol was once so sought-after that it had a waiting list.

Now, Walmart’s budget-friendly alternative, nicknamed the "Wirkin" bag, has briefly offered an accessible twist on the luxury staple, selling out in just a few days. According to Forbes Magazine, Walmart listed these faux leather bags, branded as KAMUGO or Aidrani, for just $60 to $100.

However, anyone trying to purchase one today will be met with a message on Walmart’s website stating: "We Couldn't Find This Page." Despite its short availability, the Wirkin bag quickly gained viral fame, with the internet dubbing it the "Walmart Birkin" due to its striking resemblance to Hermès’ design.

The original Hermès Birkin is described as a “globally recognized emblem of status and wealth”, and its allure extends beyond its steep price tag.

Unlike typical retail purchases, owning a Birkin involves navigating an exclusive process. Shoppers must collaborate with a Hermès associate to design their bag, selecting every detail from color to hardware. Even then, Hermès reserves the right to decide if a buyer qualifies.

This exclusivity has turned the Birkin into an investment piece, with its value appreciating faster than the S&P 500 or gold—offering a 500% return on investment over 35 years. Celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Cardi B, and Martha Stewart have all been spotted carrying Birkins, further solidifying its status.

By contrast, Walmart’s Wirkin bag represented an affordable way for everyday shoppers to embrace the Birkin aesthetic. The bags became a viral sensation on TikTok, where users celebrated the design as a playful jab at the inaccessibility of luxury goods.

Many hailed the Wirkin as a cultural statement, with comments calling to “eat the rich” and describing the bag as a symbol of solidarity for the working and middle classes. While Walmart has not confirmed plans to restock the Wirkin bag, USA Today suggests that it may return during the 2025 holiday season.

For now, those hoping to snag one might find them on resale platforms at marked-up prices. Despite its brief availability, the Wirkin bag highlights a growing appetite for affordable alternatives to luxury goods.
