A reward amounting to around $290 has been announced for persons taking accident victims to hospital, according to media reports.
India's Minister for Transportation and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, had initially announced a reward of $58 for taking an injured person to the hospital after a road accident. However, this amount has now been increased to $288.
Bollywood actor Anupam Kher interviewed Minister Nitin Gadkari and asked him several questions. The minister explained that while people tend to take road accidents seriously when they occur occasionally, they often become desensitised when such incidents happen regularly.
He emphasised that preventing accidents is not just the responsibility of the authorities but also of schools, colleges, NGOs, athletes, and the public, who need to actively promote safety and awareness.
Actor Kher pointed out that 474 people die in road accidents every day, and that this alarming statistic has made people numb to the issue.
Gadkari responded by stressing the importance of using helmets and seat belts to reduce fatalities. He also mentioned that the automobile industry had been instructed to include seat belts in the rear seats of cars.
Referring to the death of business tycoon Cyrus Poonawalla’s son, he noted that had the rear seat belt been used in the car, the incident might have been avoided. He urged everyone to ensure rear seat belts are installed in cars.
Gadkari further stated that while it’s the job of law enforcement to protect citizens' rights, ordinary people also need to take responsibility for their own safety.
